Internet graveyard: Tetris friends

AlOct 30, 2026

Theres been so much that we have lost in the path of getting to where we are now..

Tetris friends (2008-2020)

You probably seen this on Facebook games (if that was your Schtick. The themes, sounds, music was all wrapped up in one nostalgic, fun multi player game. Im sure tetris has their own versions, but this one felt very established, up untill its shutdown in 2019.

The biggest cause of the shutdown came from the depreciation of Adobe flash (which was shutdown a year later, in 2020.) The tetris company itself also did it as a way to shift from web applications, to newer games on cross platforms, like the switch, ps and xbox consoles, and ios devices.

Community instances still exist, such as notris foes. Notris foes is an almost 1-to-1 replica of the game, but runs on a client instead of a web browser.

Listed below are the modes that were available:

Single-Player Modes

• Marathon: Clear 15 levels of increasing speed.

• Sprint: Clear 40 lines as fast as possible.

• Ultra: Score as many points as possible within a 2-minute time limit.

• Survival: Stay alive as the block-dropping speed continuously ramps up.

• Tetris 1989: A retro mode styled after the classic Game Boy version (lacking modern features like hold or ghost pieces).

• N-Blox: A classic-style flash mode without hold pieces or customizable controls.

• BlockStar: An endless high-score mode exclusive to the Facebook version.

• Acorn Drop: A short-lived, branded Ice Age variant of Marathon (later discontinued).

Multiplayer Modes

• Battle 2P: A head-to-head two-player battle sending garbage lines to opponents.

• Battle 6P: A chaotic six-player survival and attack battle.

• Sprint 5P: A ranked, simultaneous multiplayer race to clear 40 lines against five other players.

• Arena: A fast-paced competitive room mode with specialized sub-modes like Arena Expert and Expert+.

• Rally 8P: An eight-player endurance or position-shifting race variant.

• Battle+ / Battle+ 6P: Enhanced battle variants featuring interactive items and power-ups.

Tetris on the web is still alive and running in other instances, such as jstris, but it doesnt have that upbeat soul that tetris friends had.

RIP!
